Sifu: The Revenge of a Lifetime

Few games capture the flow of martial arts cinema like Sifu. Every punch, kick, and parry matters, and every death ages you closer to a game over. But with the right approach, you can stay young, stylish, and deadly. Whether you're a new player struggling in the Squats or a veteran chasing the true ending, these 10 pro tips will turn you into a formidable Sifu master.

1. Spend XP on Permanent Upgrades First

At the end of each level, you visit the martial arts studio and unlock skills. Don't waste XP on temporary benefits early. Focus on permanent upgrades like Structure Deflection and Weapon Proficiency that carry over between runs. You'll get more variants of the same skill later, but the permanent foundation is key to surviving the aging process.

2. The Training Room Is Your Best Friend

The Wuguan isn't just a hub; it's a dojo where you can practice every move you've unlocked in a safe environment. Before a boss fight, spend a few minutes in training to nail your combos and timings. Repetition builds muscle memory, and Sifu is all about precision, not luck.

3. Parry More Than You Dodge

Dodging is safer, but parrying breaks your opponent's structure and leaves them open for a devastating follow-up. Learn to parry low kicks and heavy overheads. The window is tight, but the reward is huge. Once you master parries, you'll be able to counter attacks that would otherwise force you to back off.

4. Watch Your Own Structure – Not Just Theirs

Sifu has a structure bar that fills when you block or parry. If you take too many hits, your structure breaks and you become vulnerable. Keep an eye on your own bar, and use Escapes (L1) to dodge backwards and recover. A few seconds of breathing is better than eating a full combo to the face.

5. Use the Environment to Even the Odds

The levels are littered with bottles, pipes, chairs, and walls. Thrown objects stagger enemies, and wall smacks deal bonus structure damage. When you're outnumbered, a well-aimed bottle can interrupt an enemy mid-combo and create a window to focus on the main threat.

6. Learn All Three Styles: Focus on Snake for Crowds

Each martial art style has a specialty. The Snake style is particularly effective against multiple enemies, with wide sweeps and fast directional dodges. As you unlock it, practice switching between styles mid-combo to keep enemies guessing. The game rewards players who adapt to the flow of a fight.

7. Don't Forget the Take Down – But Only When Safe

When you lower an enemy's structure, you can perform a take down. It instantly eliminates that enemy and gives you a brief moment of invincibility. But be careful: trying to take down an enemy while another is swinging at you will cost you the fight. Use the focus move to clear space first, or wait for a parry to open the opportunity.

8. Use Focus Moves on Elites and Mini-Bosses

Focus moves require a full Focus bar, which fills when you hit enemies without taking damage. Save your powerful Eye of the Tiger or grab attacks for elite enemies with shields or heavy weapons. A single focus move may not kill them, but it can break their structure and put them in range of a take down.

9. Plan Around the Aging Mechanic

Aging isn't just a punishment; it's part of the strategy. You start at 20, and each death adds a year. If you're 30 and still haven't beaten the second level, consider replaying earlier levels to earn enough XP to buy permanent upgrades. Alternatively, focusing on ending the run under 25 grants the true ending, but don't obsess over it on your first playthrough.

10. Master the Flow of the Parry – and the Dash

The combination of parry and dash is your ultimate defensive tool. A perfect parry will stagger an enemy, but a quick dash can reposition you to avoid a grapple attack. In the final boss fights, you'll need to read attacks and alternate between parry and dash seamlessly. Spend a full life just practicing this flow on the training dummies.

Embrace the Suffering

Sifu is a game about patience and persistence. The more you fall, the more you learn. With these tips, you'll age a little slower, fight a little smarter, and ultimately, deliver the perfect closing blow. Remember: a true master never stops learning – even from failure.
